History of the International French Bulldog Club
IKFB Germany 1909-1999
First part

90 years of the IKFB

If we look for information about the history of the IKFB in the few books that exist dedicated to the French Bullldog we find the following lines.
"On a beautiful day in the summer of 1909 four serious breeders and lovers of the FB shared a table at the Parkhotel, Munich. They discussed the development and breeding of the dog, and also talked of the need to form a club for all breeders, so was born the IBFC (Internationale Bouldogue Français Club). There were four nationalities present and so the adjective "Internationale" was well justified.
The founders were: John Blacker ( Spain), Heinrich Knotz (Germany), Ernest Langford ( England) and Maria Múller (Austria). This international club made rapid progress".

But, as is so often the case, the truth is slightly different. The birth of this new club, which later changed its name to IKFB, was not remotely easy. Its foundation stirred up a hornets' nest.
Until 1909 the French Bulldog came under the "Kontinentaler Bulldog-Club" of Berlin, and were inscribed in their stud books. Also the "Scosshund Klub" of Berlin ( for lapdogs) felt itself the most appropriate for the breed. These two clubs reacted strongly against the formation of a specialist club, and the dispute soon reached the pages of the specialist press.
So one of the founders of the IFBC (John Blacker), on 23/9/09, found himself moved to write to the "Sportblatt fur Zuchter und Liebhaber von Rassenhund" (a magazine for sportsmen and dog breeders) because the "Kontinentaler Bulldog-Club" had affirmed that the IBFC had unfairly claimed to be the only specialist club for the breed.

"In my function as member of the comittee of this club (IFBC) I must strongly protest these claims. A club for lapdogs that includes the French Bulldog cannot be remotely considered a specialist club, a bulldog club, which covers all three types is indeed a specialist club, but not for the French Bulldog, as it does not cater exclusively for this breed. The IBFC is, and will continue to be , the only club dedicated to the breed in Germany.
These other claims are necessarily false and as such go against the principles of good sportsmanship".
Yrs sincerely, John Blacker.
