Establishment

The H.B.C., or in it’s complete form, The Hollandse Bulldog Club, is one of the Netherlands oldest breed associations. To be exact, the H.B.C. was established on July 1st 1907 in Amsterdam.

In Amsterdam’s Hotel Polen the gentlemen Enthoven, Van der Does, Brughoff, Stock and Delder came together and their meeting resulted in this historical occurrence. The newly formed association was approved, by royal decision, on November 14th of that year. 1907 was also the year in which the first French Bulldog was registered in the Netherlands Canine Pedigree (N.H.S.B.). Fifteen years earlier, in 1892, in a publication of the Netherlands Canine Pedigree, the first two registered English Bulldogs were traced. At the time there was not an official distinction made between the English and the French Bulldog, and they were registered simply as “Bulldogs.” The naming of our club was founded in this tradition, as the English Bulldog, the Toy Bulldog, and the French Bulldog were all represented by the H.B.C. in those early years.

The Toy Bulldog, as he was called, eventually disappeared from the canine world over the course of time. It was only a few decades ago that a separate club was established for the English Bulldog, that was also recognized by the National Dutch Kennel Club (Raad van Beheer). We now proudly refer to ourselves as The H.B.C. : Your official breed association in The Netherlands for the French Bulldog. More information about our association, the French Bulldog, health, etc. can be found on our official website.
